A lovely caring consultant, who actually seems to care about his patients. Whilst you are with him he makes you feel like you have his complete attention, however busy he may be in the background. I found him very honest, with me and totally had respect for his judgement .I had other health issues that had to be taken into account, but I had complete confidence in him to look after me. My operation for a new hip has been very successful, and I now feel I have my life back. Thank you Dennis!.

A lovely man, always seems to have time for you, and spends time explaining my situation, along with friendly talk about private life.

I was in a great deal of pain from my left knee and it was getting increasingly bad through arthritis from an old football injury. I had a knee replacement by Mr Kosuge, who was brilliant, he explained the procedure and performed the operation, It has transformed my life, and the aftercare and communication has been first class, I cannot thank him, his team and Rivers Hospital for the care and attention that I received.

Prior to my two hip replacement operations- complicated by hip dysplasia- I had been walking effortfully using crutches for about a year. What had been automatic, taken-for-granted movement had to be planned in advance, and that was tiring and mood-lowering. I needed to take pain medication daily despite which a restorative night's sleep remained a past memory. Weight had begun to pile on after needing to give up running- between 5 and 10 years ago- and because I was increasingly sedentary. My husband is very kind and solicitous: nonetheless I didn't like having- for the first time in my life- to ask continuously for his help and being dependent on others outside the home to open doors, carry my bags and have to alter where in a building we could meet. These changes eroded my view of myself as an active agent in my own life. I quickly felt at ease talking to Mr Kosuge in our pre-operative meetings because he is a doctor who is able to form a caring, equal relationship with patients. My time with him was characterised by the invitation to explore and clarify concerns in a way that left me feeling heard and actively involved in decision-making. His knowledge and clear, open communication built trust rapidly. Both operations went very well. I was never in pain and stopped taking all painkillers by day 10 of the second operation. Both wounds remained clean and healed quickly. I was up and moving on the first day; discharged a couple of days later; going for a walk a few days after that and back at work 6 weeks after the operation. A silly detail perhaps but meaningful to me was that without crutches, we could hold hands again and I could make my husband a cup of tea and bring it to him. Aside from having to adapt the way I put on my socks and wash my feet, I can complete all self-care independently. What is most important is that my husband and I have been able to resume the activities we enjoy- going for walks in beautiful places, spending an afternoon at an exhibition or going out with family and friends who are active too. I feel like my usual self but enhanced by a greater enthusiasm than ever for life because I feel liberated, feel better than I have for many years. We've stood at the top of a mountain and are planning a walking holiday in a European national park. If you'd asked me 2 years ago to predict what I would be doing, resigned to arthritis running in the family, I would not have imagined doing either. I feel very lucky and enormously grateful to have Mr Kosuge as my consultant surgeon. He combines technical expertise and evidence-based procedural precision with the personal qualities of respect, integrity, friendliness and care that I would wish for all patients everywhere. The way he approached me is the way I couldn't help but notice is the way he approaches everyone. I think this must enable his team to feel they matter in general and that they can speak up if they notice an error in the making for example. Having an effective team can only aid optimal performance in the theatre.

Very friendly and understanding of my situation and needs. Realised I wanted to return to my sport which is cycling as soon as possible. The only downside I had to call hospital myself to get my yearly check up.

Profile

Mr Kosuge developed his passion for Trauma & Orthopaedics as a junior doctor and pursued this by enrolling onto the North-East Thames Percival Pott Orthopaedic Training Programme. His training took him to prestigious centres including The Royal London Hospital, The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital and Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital. He was inspired by a number of his excellent trainers to focus on the subspecialty of hip and knee joint replacements.

Following completion of specialist training in the United Kingdom, he enrolled onto and successfully completed a one-year fellowship at the Royal Adelaide Hospital in Australia under the auspices of Professor Donald Howie. This fellowship allowed Mr Kosuge to refine his skills in hip and knee joint replacements, as well as revision hip replacements. During his orthopaedic training, he was the recipient of the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) Zimmer Adult Reconstruction Hips and Knees Fellowship in 2014, the AOTrauma Fellowship in 2013 and the Tohoku University Orthopaedic Visiting Fellowship in 2010 – and utilised his time visiting, learning and exchanging ideas with centres of excellence in Japan.
